Tip # 1. Change Your Filters
Which ones? ALL of them! Including, but not limited to:
HVAC/Air Filters - These need to be replaced around every three months! Make sure to choose the right size for your vents and appliances.
Car Filters - These also need to be replaced, but only about once a year or every 15,000 miles. Different cars have different types of cabin and engine filters, so be sure to find the ones that work with your car. You can change them yourself, or go to the shop to get them replaced.
Dishwasher Filter - This is located at the bottom of your dishwasher and is usually a circular/cylindrical shape. Take it out and scrub with dish soap and hot water!
Vacuum Filters - Yes, these exist! They're usually below the dust cup. The easiest way to clean them is to soak them in Dawn Dish Soap (Amazon) and La's Totally Awesome Cleaning Vinegar (Amazon). More info on how to clean these coming soon in our next blog post!
Filters get clogged after all the dust, pollen, and other summer "gross-ities" get caught in them throughout the season. It's important to change them to keep things that are supposed to keep your house clean, clean!
Tip # 2. Clean Your Carpets
A carpet shampooer can go a looong way. Dust and other icks can build up within carpets more-so in the summer than in other seasons due to increased outdoor activity and open windows. It's important to deep clean your rugs and carpets after the season is over to avoid allergens and mold from forming further.
I like to clean my carpets at least twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. We usually use Zep All-Purpose Carpet Shampoo from Amazon, it's worked the best for us on all types of carpets and rugs.
Tip # 3. De-Stinkify!
Make your space not only look cozy, but smell cozy too! Make DIY potpourri by mixing dried citrus, cinnamon sticks, and cloves in a jar. Add your favorite essential oil, (we like nutmeg!) and shake it up. Results are best if you leave the jar closed for a day!
Other ingredients that are good for potpourri that we like to use:
Flowers
Leaves
Dried Berries
Pine Cones
Nuts
